When Jamie and I were in Niagara a few weeks back for a wine tasting tour, we found ourselves looking through the wineries shops, as you do. Jamie was actually the one who stumbled on what I thought was the cutest entertaining idea, red wine that came with a little at-home mulling kit in a small burlap sachet. I loved the concept so much that I made a mental note to recreate something similar for holiday hosting gifts. Wine is always a good idea to bring to a party regardless, but I loved stepping it up a notch with these mulling kit sachets. I picked up the supplies I’d need to make these adorable mulled wine steeping kits at the Bulk Barn so that I can make multiples throughout the season. They can simply be thrown together at the last-minute and attached to the bottle with a gift tag and recipe for mulled wine on the back. Speaking of mulled wine, I didn’t realize just how easy it is to make until this! Jackson Triggs sent over a few bottles of their Cabernet Sauvignon which is a dry and medium bodied wine, perfect for mulling. I simply added the other mulling ingredients into a slow cooker for about an hour and the result was warm, spicy and oh so comforting mulled wine that goes down a bit too easily.
What You Will Need:
-Tea steeping sachets with drawstrings
-1-2 dehydrated orange slices
-2 star anice
-8-12 cloves
-5-8 cardamom pods
-2 cinnamon sticks
-Small handful of pink peppercorns
-Gifting tag (optional)
-Sprig of greenery (I used Juniper Berries but you can use whatever you like and it is also optional).
Putting Together:
Simply add all of the ingreidents into the sachets, tie on a sprig of greenery and hang the bag over the wine bottle. Add on a cute gifting tag for good measure! For an extra special touch write the mulled wine recipe on the back of the gifting tag!
- 1 Bottle of red wine like Pinot Noir or Cabernet Sauvignon (I used Jackson Triggs Cabernet Sauvignon)
- Zest and juice of 1/2 an orange
- 2 cups apple cider
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 2 star anice
- 8-12 cloves
- 5-8 cardamom pods
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- Small handful of pink peppercorns
- Add all ingredients to a slow cooker or large pot on medium heat.
- Mull for at least 1 hour and turn onto low when you are ready to serve so the mulled wine stays warm.
- Strain the mixture before serving and garnish with cinnamon stick and dehydrated orange.
