If you’ve been keeping any tabs on the current fashion seen, you’ll notice that neckties have become all the rage lately. I’m not talking about the traditional tie you’ll see on a business man. I’m referring to delicate ribbons, patterned scarves, lush bows, and embellished details. *Swoon* Gucci in particular has been creating the most lovely looks with neckties. See for yourself here. Unfortunately for me, Gucci is not exactly in my budget at the moment. This motivated me to come up with some alternate options. I often tie a handkerchief around my neck when I go to work, and I love the little pop of color it gives my outfit. But, I decided I wanted to up the anti a bit. From a simple ribbon to an embroidered fabric tie, there’s an option for everyone! So here are neckties five ways to give you some inspiration for your spring wardrobe!

Embroider a saying 

To embroider a saying on your necktie, use a white chalk pencil or any removable tool to write your desired phrase. I used a simple back stitch (instructions here) and embroidered directly over my markings. The template for the “bye, hi” I used can be found, here. We love the idea of writing a quirky phrase of maybe something in another language to show off your diverse cultural background! 😉

Make a big bow

The big bow is a fun and easy way to make a statement! Here we used fabric to create a tie, but you could also use a thicket velvet ribbon to achieve a similar look! The shirt is so fun with all the embroidery so we didn’t want to overpower it with something too complicated. A solid colored bow is the way to go.

Use simple stitches

Embroider a few stars in different sizes all over a piece of fabric. I left the edges raw for a fun casual look. The stars are more concentrated at the edges and trickle up towards the center. Paired with a crisp white shirt, you transform the look into something whimsical!

Thin bow

We found a dainty vintage red ribbon and loved how it looked against a blue pinstripe! Take any shirt you have in your closet and find a ribbon you have lying around from an old gift and you’re good to go!

Bolo style bow

The graphic quality of this shirt is so great, and we didn’t want to compete with details. We stuck with a black ribbon and created a more structured bolo style bow out of grosgrain ribbon. Cut a piece of ribbon about 6 inches long and glue the ends together to create a loop. Take another piece of ribbon about 1 1/2 inches long and wrap it around the center of the loop and glue into place, making the bow. Cut two pieces of ribbon 4-5 inches long and glue to the back of the bow at slight angles. Use a safety pin to apply.
