A Peek At Krystin Lee’s Bedroom Makeover!

When interior designer (and Glitter Guide home tour alum!) Jacquelyn Clark shot our team an email detailing one of her latest projects, it took no more than three seconds for all of us to simultaneously stop what we were doing to click through to what we knew would be an amazing space.

As expected, the bedroom makeover that Jacquelyn completed in partnership with textiles designer Danni Simmen for Suburban Faux-Pas blogger, Krystin Lee, is nothing short of dreamy. What first sparked your interest—and eventual career path—in interior design?

Jacquelyn Clark: I was very lucky growing up because I always knew I wanted to be an interior designer. I was that kid who was constantly arranging and re-arranging my bedroom, often spending my weekends at the paint or fabric store. My mom was wonderful and really fostered that creativity and, within reason, would fund my projects and ideas from the time I was very little. Needless to say, it’s been in my bones since the start. I still have a binder filled with floor plans I designed when I was seven years old (most of which focused on little nooks and crannies for epic games of hide and seek).

Tell us how this dream team collaboration came to be!

JC: My sweet friend Danni Simmen—owner of the beautiful fabric line Pepper B.—had been in discussion with Suburban Faux-Pas blogger, Krystin Lee, about a master bedroom revamp long before I came on the scene. When they decided to take it to the next level, they reached out to see if I’d be interested in collaborating. The rest, as they say, is history. It was a bit of a no-brainer on my end. These ladies completely embody everything I admire, and it was a wonderful experience from start to finish.

What were Krystin’s main goals in making over her bedroom?

Krystin Lee: As a true girly-girl at heart, I wanted to channel my personal style into the bedroom’s overall aesthetic, all while maintaining some sense of masculinity for my husband. There were trade-offs along the way—a luxe wallpaper for me and crisp white sheets and a dark gallery wall for him. Thankfully, Jacquelyn was fabulous at balancing both our requests and finding a middle ground for us both. One thing we could both agree on was that we wanted the bedroom to feel like a retreat, with comfy pillows, lots of textures and a hotel-like vibe.

The Lees dreamed of a relaxing space to return home to at the end of a long day. With that in mind, I channeled my best version of a spa-meets-hotel vibe into a luxurious master retreat.

What are your tips for adding personality to a space that’s centered on a neutral color palette?

JC: The biggest mistake I see when it comes to designing a primarily neutral space is not introducing enough texture. Layering a variety of textures—through fabric selection, bedding, furniture finishes and the like—is the easiest way to add warmth and create interest, all while staying true to your palette.

Name the textiles and textures that are uniquely ideal for a bedroom.

JC: The Lees dreamed of a relaxing space to return home to at the end of a long day. With that in mind, I channeled my best version of a spa-meets-hotel vibe into a luxurious master retreat. While every last detail was thought out to the utmost degree, the secret sauce was definitely when it came to the bedding. From luxe Pepper B. pillows and the comfiest mattress on the market, to an overstuffed down-filled comforter, their bed is literally the stuff that dreams are made of.

How were you able to bring Krystin’s design aesthetic to life in this space?

JC: A big part of Krystin’s success as a social influencer lies within her incredibly strong, very feminine brand. She has mastered the art of blogging and social media long before many, so it only made sense to use her brand identity as a jumping off point when it came to the design of her bedroom. That being said, I wanted to take her slightly outside her comfort zone and modernize her room just a touch so it didn’t feel too expected. I still made sure to infuse those strong feminine elements with the use of blush and gold wallpaper in her rotunda, utilizing her existing glamorous side tables and tons of pretty patterns in her pillow play—all are things that scream Krystin.

What was your favorite aspect of partnering with your friend and designer, Danni Simmen of Pepper B.? What feeling or mood did her designs add to the bedroom makeover?

JC: I’m convinced that you will never meet anyone as sweet as Danni Simmen. She is as good as gold, and someone I feel very lucky to call my friend. Her pillows have acted as a jumping off point for more projects of mine than I can count, and Krystin’s master was no exception. Danni’s work feels fresh and feminine, but in a slightly more modern way. That was exactly the look I was after for Krystin’s space.

What’s your favorite thing about the finished space, Krystin?

KL: I’d have to say it’s a toss up between the wallpapered rotunda (that print!) and the textures on the bed. I’ve always wanted one of those picturesque beds that mix textures, colors, patterns and layers. The finished product couldn’t have been better. I love diving in after a long day!

JC: There are so many incredible Toronto-based resources with more popping up daily! My favorites for small, luxe homegoods right now are Souvenir, Black Rooster Decor, La Merceria and Rowan.
