Chapsticks, lipstick bullets, liquid lipsticks, gloss… I'm happy to add any of it to my mildly embarrassing collection. 😉 As someone who really enjoys the process of makeup and getting ready, something I've come to learn is that how you care for your skin each day is one of the most important aspects of a beauty routine. Having a regular skin care routine means all the difference in how your makeup applies and looks. And using a light lip scrub is the perfect way to moisturize, prep your lips for a flawless lipstick application, AND help remove liquid lipsticks at the end of the day!
I'm so excited to share this all-natural and super delicious lip scrub with you! It's the perfect summery scrub to keep at your vanity and of course, give as a gift. 🙂
Supplies:
-glass balm jars (I picked up a few 1 ounce jars from Amazon.)
-coconut oil
–caster sugar
-honey (I used wild orange honey for a little extra flavor.)
–lemon and grapefruit essential oils
-small mixing bowl
In a small mixing bowl, combine 1 tablespoon of coconut oil, 4 tablespoons of caster sugar, 1 teaspoon of wild orange honey, 8 drops of grapefruit essential oil and 8 drops of lemon essential oil. Mix until smooth. Scoop the sugary scrub into balm jars of your choice. Easy right?! Your homemade scrub will store for up to 6 months!
We all know the amazing benefits of coconut oil – this ingredient will really add moisture to your lips and the oils help break down liquid lipsticks, so it makes removing makeup SO much easier! Honey is incredible too – it has tons of antioxidants and enzymes that also help nourish and cleanse the skin. I love using a caster sugar for this recipe because it's so fine and gives you a nice gentle scrub that helps remove dry skin and makeup but doesn't leave your lips irritated.
Not only do I love using this scrub to help remove lipstick, especially my intense, stay-forever liquid lipsticks, but I especially love this to prep my lips before applying lipstick. It give my lips such a smooth finish and makes my lipstick look on point! If you're using this scrub as a lipstick remover, then be sure to follow up with a moisturizing lip balm to finish it off!
This stuff smells SO good you'll want to eat it… so no judgement if you lick a little off your lips. 😉 Lots of love, Sav.

This sounds almost good enough to eat! I’ll be trying this DIY beauty recipe for sure. Would make an excellent gift idea as well. Thanks for the great tutorial!
LOVE THIS IDEA. I would probably use oranges because grapefruit is not my favourite fruit.

Lovely idea! Please make sure that your essential oils are safe for human consumption before using in this recipe. Not all brands and not all scents are.
That seems like an amazing lip scrub, can’t wait to try it out myself!
what kind of coconut oil do you recommend?
My lips are always so chapped, and decent sugar scrubs can be so hard to find. Definitely going to give this one a try! Thanks for sharing!

I would like to learn about that stay forever liquid lipsticks. I always seem to have a problem finding the staying ones.
Lipsense stays on up to 18 hours! It doesn’t come off! I used the lip scrub tutorial to help prep my lips before applying the lipsense!
Hi Olivia! We showed that tutorial on the blog last week: http://www.abeautifulmess.com/2016/06/sherbet-water-marble-mani-diy.html 🙂 -Jacki

This is great! If you leave out the caster sugar, could this be a lip balm??
How does this retain its water consistence? My store-bought one dried and when I decided to try adding a bit of water just wasn’t the right feel/consistency.
A word of warning – both lemon and grapefruit essential oils are photosensitive, meaning that when your skin is exposed to the sun, they may cause skin discolorations or rashes. Read up: http://www.aromaweb.com/articles/phototoxicity-essential-oils.asp
Options:
1) Use a different eo blend
2) Choose steam-distilled essential oils (apparently those are safe)
These photos are gorgeous and this scrub sounds divine!
