{Florence Macdonald}

Only 5 weeks after loosing my boyfriends grandfather, it was quite the shock to hear that once again we would be flying home to Halifax for the funeral of Florence, my boyfriends grandmother. Florence suffered from Alzheimer’s for many years, and we had been preparing ourselves for this day for quite a while, but no matter how much you prepare yourself for loosing someone, it is never easy to wrap your head around. Although I wasn’t lucky enough to know Flo when she was in her best years, I am grateful I was able to see her smile and receive her hugs and kisses on the cheek every time I visited her over the last six years. I truly believe that in some way Flo knew that her husband was gone and that she wanted to be with him. I believe that their love was so strong, that even after 61 years of marriage, their unbreakable bond could not keep them apart for too long. I feel truly blessed that I was able to know both Florence and Aubrey and have so much love in my heart for them. They are at peace and together now, and that gives me so much hope for the future. My heart and mind is open, and I hope that their little love story inspires others to feel the same. Have a great weekend everyone, see you Monday.

Gold Leaf Eggs

April 15, 2014

Every Easter When I was a child, my mom would spend hours blowing out eggs for my sisters and I to decorate. Whether it was dye, stickers, paint or glitter… you name it, we used it to create our “masterpieces”.  Since those days my taste for decorating has become more refined, but I will never forget the memories of decorating easter eggs each year. I haven’t actually decorated easter eggs in quite some time but this year I really wanted to try out these gold leaf eggs I saw on Martha Stewart’s website. I ended up boiling my eggs but after these beauties were complete I regretted not blowing them out. They are the most glamorous and elegant easter eggs I have ever seen, and although they do take some time to complete the result is absolutely stunning.

3Step 1: Boil eggs for 20 minutes and then submerge them in cold water until the eggs are cold. If you want to keep your eggs then you will want to blow them out.

4Step 2: While you are waiting for your eggs to cool, add water and food colouring to mason jars to create the dye for the eggs. Here is a chart to give you an idea of dye to water ratios and dye colours

5Step 3: Once your easter eggs are dyed the colours you would like (I did pastel shades) lay the wet eggs on top of toothpicks in a styrofoam block.

6Step 4: If you decide to only gold leaf half of your eggs you will need to securely wrap washi tape or masking tape around the eggs. Apply a thin lucite layer of gold leaf adhesive onto your egg and allow to dry until tacky.

7Step 5: Roll your eggs around the gold leaf leaving some gaps so the colour will show through

8Step 6: Allow eggs to dry fully. TIP* if you decided to blow your easter eggs and want to keep them make sure to apply a sealant to the gold leaf so that it doesn’t oxidize

Bold Blooms

April 10, 2014

On Tuesday I was invited to a fashion presentation at Parlour on Adelaide to view Elan + Castor’s F/W 2014 presentation. Formally called Moose&Beaver, creative director Leah Antoinette felt like the name wasn’t fitting with the designs and brand they wanted to create. The presentation was inspired by style icons such as Jane Birken but I got more of a 1920’s vibe from the collection. The room was dim, like an underground bar from the 20’s and jazz music filled the air. It was a lovely evening full of cocktails, a tasting menu and of course fashion. Personally, I couldn’t have been happier to wear a pencil skirt with bare legs so I was in a great mood all evening.
